Nokian Fabriikki Housing is located in the Asemanseutu area, near the Nokia railway station. The former industrial area is developing as a part of Nokia downtown development vision. The site is located in between red brick factory buildings of Nanso and a lush free flowing forest stream. The main facade material is fine-washed concrete in a lively terracotta shade, matching the surrounding buildings with a subtly differentiating similarity.
Communality and social sustainability was one of the main design principles of the project that includes 49 living units. There is an array of apartments, ranging from studios to two-bedroom family apartments. The flexible common space on the ground floor lends itself for many functions and can be used as a remote working space, as well as an event space. The multifunctionality of the space encourages people to use it as an extension of their own apartments. Additionally, each floor has a spacious shared balcony, which allows for a comfortable nearby outdoor lounging space for the people living in the studio apartments. The courtyard facing the stream offers residents the opportunity to garden their own herbs and vegetables.
