The competition proposal Polut is a new urban museum in the centre of Pori, Finland. As its name (”Pathways”) suggests, the design consists of two axes: The Collection - a path of cultural history from the riverside towards the center - connects the Satakunta museum with the innovative viewing warehouse to the new building of Aarre, creating a kind of urban bookshelf in the center of Pori that opens up the collections of the museum to the public. The use of the historic factory block will transform from beer production to the creation of culture and art - the new axis of production, the modern Pori path, connects the old brewery and Annankatu-street to Nortamonpuisto-park.
In order to develop modern and flexible museum facilities, and to preserve Kivi-Pori’s low building stock and valuable river landscape, the new construction will be centered around Hotelli Otava. The new exhibition spaces wrap around a courtyard. A new entrance to the building will be opened from the level of riverside and a new connection created at the basement level through the collection warehouse to new Aarre building and Hotel Otava.
The status of the Satakunta museum building as part of Finnish museum history is respected- it will be renovated alongside the the facade repair. Efforts are made to restore the original spatial and architectural solutions, and the facade elements will be renewed. The park strips surrounding the museum park and the building will be activated and developed as part of Jokikaupunki active waterfront.
