Ylämyllyntie Housing is a project consisting of three apartment buildings in the Miilukorpi residential area in Espoo, Finland. The buildings are placed along the edges of the site, creating a communal courtyard between the buildings. The main principles in the design were fitting the project into the context of low-density residential housing, as well as respecting the views and the historically notable architecture of Villa Solkulla on the neighboring property.
The main goal in the spatial design was to have a diverse collection of versatile apartments, for many different kinds of people and their individual needs. The apartment sizes vary from compact studios all the way to larger family apartments in two floors. Extra care was put into the variety of the studio apartments. They have versatility built in them through different sizes, ceiling heights, storage space, spatial configurations and possibilities for unique arrangements and furnishing.
The main facade material is light colored plastering, accentuated by timber-clad balconies and aluminium meshes for vines to grow on. The metal sheet roof extends further down to substitute the facade surfaces of the third floors on the outer edges of the block in order to make the buildings fit better with the scale of the surrounding detached buildings. The apartments in the third floors protrude through the surface to create cozy, attic apartment spaces.
